THESE SKETCHES FORM an ongoing series of explorations about the relationship between cutting and drawing. The silhouettes were cut from rapid pencil sketches of people in the street as they hurried by, while the background drawings were made in a sketchbook with a set of coloured pens.
My aim was to capture energy and motion in a static paper cutting. They arose from a long-standing preoccupation of mine about making silhouettes of people who can’t (or won’t) keep still. Can a silhouette ever really appear to be in motion?
