MY STRING & PAINT experiments confirmed that creating a profile in string alone is complicated. I realised scale is important and that (like my original dream) I would need many more strings and to work on a very large scale.
In this series of drawings I abandoned painted highlights and instead creating the profile with ruler and pencil alone. The name comes from a comment many people made: that the string silhouettes resembled a spider’s web.
The drawings are complex, pale and really hard to photograph. They are intended as studies for large sculpture silhouettes, made in string or wire, and really need to be seen close up to be understood. Many drawings are available in the studio.
